Palos de la Frontera or
Palos, is a town and
municipality located in the southwestern
Spanish province of
Huelva, in the autonomous community of
Andalusia. It is situated some 13
km from the provincial capital,
Huelva. According to the
2006 census, the city had a population of 8,415.
Palos is the site of the
Rábida Monastery where
Christopher Columbus consulted with the
Franciscans about his plans for organizing an expedition of discovery. Years later, on
Aug 3,
1492, Columbus's ships sailed from this town to discover
the Americas.
There's a station in the
Madrid Metro named after this town.
